Seth Ogden aka Acidbat has spent the better part of a decade staving off creative boredom exploring the outer edges of underground electronic music while absorbing the lessons of production and composition of his musical touchstones. The new Acidbat album Meta Morph is aptly named because across its ten tracks Ogden playfully stretches and bends spare and minimalist techno tracks into new shapes. There is even a song called “Voltron” whose title more than suggests a hybrid approach to songcraft. One hears nods to the likes of Download, Aphex Twin, The Orb, Underworld and Future Sound of London in the album's soundscapes. But it's also obvious that Ogden has taken in the influence of modern dubtechno and post-IDM ambient and drawn on an abstracted notion of dub that lends each song a clean and spacious quality that even when elaborate percussive threads weave in and out of textural tone streams and pointillist rhythmic melodies and drones convey a tranquil clarity. There is the aesthetics of sampling as one might expect given presumed influences and the organic flow of the album overall but the precision in the placement and execution of each sound speaks to Ogden's mastery of hardware workflow as he is able to make this music work in the live setting as well. In recent years Ogden has experimented with ambient techno, noise, minimal industrial, IDM, glitchcore, hip-hop and other electronic music forms and taken from each ideas for refining and sculpting all elements of his sound with Meta Morph embodying the most developed state of his creative work to date.
